    Aeron Chair Features

Aeron Office Chair by Herman Miller

An adjustable, ergonomic task chair available in three sizes with a seat and back composed of semi transparent flexible mesh called Pellicle®. Available in either Basic or Highly Adjustable models, the Basic chair shares the Pneumatic lift, Kinemat Tilt mechanism and Tilt Tension adjustment with the Highly Adjustable chair, which offers all the options.

    Supportive, breathable Pellicle® suspension
Instead of traditional fabric and foam, Aeron's mesh seating surface conforms to the sitter's shape, evenly distributes weight to eliminate pressure points and lets air pass thru for cool comfort.

    Kinemat Tilt mechanism
The built-in dynamics apparatus allows the body to pivot naturally for proper support from forward to reclining postures.

    Tilt Tension adjustment
Allows the user to control the resistance felt when leaning back in the chair.

    Pneumatic Lift
The seat height adjustment uses compressed air to raise the seat height from a low of 16 in. to a high of 20.5 in.

    Lumbar Pad (Optional)
An ergonomic device that can be adjusted vertically through a 4.5-inch height range. Its depth is also adjustable.

    PostureFit (Optional)
A highly-adjustable ergonomic device that offers gentle support to the pelvis and can be adjustable in and out for stronger, firmer lumbar support.

    Adjustable Arms (Optional)
Armrests pivot inward 17.5 degrees for keying and outward 15 degrees for mousing. Arm height adjusts independently within a four-inch vertical range.

    Tilt Limiter (Optional)
The user can control and limit the tilt range.

    Forward Tilt (Optional)
Positions the seat angle 5 degrees forward, a posture favored by many computer users.

    PostureFit® Back Support

Aeron Chair PostureFit Back / Lumbar Support

PostureFit is an ergonomic device available as an option on the Aeron chair. It is made up of 3 elements:

    • Butterfly pad
    • Wishbone frame
    • Adjustment knob

The butterfly pad is the central element of the device. It’s what supports the pelvis, allowing it to sustain a forward rotation, keeping it from rolling backwards into the void between your lower back and the chair. It works in conjunction with the Pellicle suspension of the Aeron chair, molding to the user's contours to provide custom-fitted support. Unlike traditional lumbar where more support means more pressure, PostureFit offers gentle support, marrying to the contours of the body. In fact, you may not realize it is there until you take it away!

The wishbone frame and the adjustment knob work together to control the degree of support the user requires. The wishbone frame also holds the butterfly pad in place and its shape complements the lines of the Aeron chair, enhancing its design. It is available in three sizes: A, B and C.

    Caster Options

    What casters are available?
The Aeron Chair from comes standard with carpet casters. These casters are designed for standard office carpet. Other casters available are hard-floor and deep-carpet casters.

    What are hard-floor casters?
Hard-Floor casters are designed for non-carpeted floors. They have a thin rubberized coating to prevent floor marring. In addition, hard-floor casters have less roll to prevent the chair from flying across the room when you push away from your desk.

    What are deep-carpet casters?
Deep-Carpet casters are designed for carpet thicker than that found in a typical office. These 3" casters are slightly larger than the standard 2.5" casters. They are designed to ensure that the chair moves easily on thicker carpet.

        Excellent Chair

        Great chair and fast shipping!

      Posted March 15, 2018

I bought a used Aeron chair and it came not in perfect condition but very good condition. I was shocked that it shipped the same day I ordered it because I ordered it in the afternoon and I was extremely shocked that it arrived it the next day; I realize that it came from a neighboring state as why it came so quickly but I didn't not expect it to arrive the very next day less than 24 hours after placing the order - AWESOME!

      Yes, I recommend this product.

Aeron Size A the perfect chair for short people

      Posted Februrary 2, 2018

I am a 5'4.5" male. The Aeron Size A is the only chair in which I have been comfortable. The shorter depth of the seat allows me to have my back fully supported with no pressure near my knee. Seats with greater seat depth have always forced me to scoot and bend forward thus depriving me of back support.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

        Great chair

Certified pre-owned in great condition. A couple extremely minor, superficial scratches on the frame but new mechanical pieces and mesh. Excellent postural support, rolls easily and feels like new. 12-yr warrantee nice for added peace-of-mind.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

We chose OfficeDesigns because they are an authorized Herman Miller dealer and use original manufacturer parts. Our certified preowned Aeron chair was a great deal! Everything on it works, there was only one tiny scuff mark on the edge of the seat, no other visible damage or wear. The lumbar support looks brand new, and everything is spotlessly clean. My husband couldn't be more thrilled!

BTW: I read reviews of other sites complaining about the packing and shipping. Have no worries with OfficeDesigns -- the box was VERY heavy duty, packing secure, padding appropriate, and the delivery was faster than I imagined possible (2 days!). WOW!

      Yes, I recommend this product.

        A little loose

      Posted October 26, 2017

This is the second certified pre-owned Aeron I have purchased from Office Designs. The first was much tighter and was generally in better shape. Everything works on my most current purchase, it is just that all the pivot points are very loose compared to my first chair. It has clicks and creaks and groans that remind me that it is used. The first chair did not feel this way. I imagine it is hit-and-miss with regard to how much use these pre-owned chairs have seen. The one I got seems like it was used in daily hall races by the biggest member of the team.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

Better be ready to use youtube to put it together

      Posted September 26, 2017

I bought this chair at a great price aand received it VERY quickly in great shape.

      1. There was no warranty(as stated on the website) in the box.

      2. the instructions are horrible, took two days to assemble, finally gave up on instructions and contacted office designs

      3. asked for help with assembly, waited and contacted second time. Finally gave up and went to youtube-HINT go to youtube first and save yourself aggravation.

Will think twice before I would buy from this website again.

No, I do not recommend this product.

        Looks new to me

Packaged like new, works like new. No reservations or buyers remorse on this one!

      Yes, I recommend this product.

        Great value. Looks new.

      Posted September 14, 2017

We are very pleased with the appearance of our chair. The adjusment controls seem a bit hard to work. Not sure if thats due to it being pre-owned, or if they're typically a little difficult. We followed instructions found online to figure out how to use it, as none came with the chair.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

      Posted August 29, 2017

I had always used the office chair provided by my company and was satisfied as far as it being a functional office chair. As a counselor I spend 50% of my time reclined listening to clients and the other 50% typing notes and reports. My chair was good for the reclining, not so much for the typing. As I work for a non-profit, they weren't putting ergonomical office chairs high on their priority list so I decided, since I spent alot on a mattress due to the time I spend on it, I might as well do the same with an office chair that I spend most of my 50 hour work week in. After doing research, this chair kept popping up as one of the best. Unfortunately, 800 - 1000 dollars for a new one, was a little much for me. Found this site and ""certified preowned"" chairs for a ""decent deal.""
Chair was delivered quickly and packed well. Good size (B) that fit my 5'8"" 145 lbs body well. I believe the overall chair is an upgrade. Old chair reclined but only had one setting - recline. I really like the adjustability (through the tension knob) of the recline. Can set it soft which provides a deep recline or tighten it up (few quick turns of the knob) and get a as little recline as you want or lock it so no recline. The lean forward tilt is good, not great, and provides good support on your back for typing. This is also one of the reasons I did not give it five stars. I'm not sure if it is due to the fact if it is used or the way the chair is, but when locked in the forward tilt, it sometimes feels (and sounds) like it snaps back a notch, after it is set and I lean back a little. It only does it when it is first set and the first time I lean back, then it stays in that position until I release the forward tilt. It stays tilted forward, but that initial jump each time is a little annoying. Two, there is a slight squeak when it is in recline mode and I rock a little in it. It sounds and feels like the spring inside, I haven't bothered to see if I can take the cover off and oil it or anything as I'm hoping after some use (had it two weeks) it goes away. It's not loud and no one else can really hear it, but I do, and I can feel it a little, in the seat. For the price, even used, I expected a little better. Overall, I'm satisfied. It's better than the chair I had, the support is much better, the options (adjustable recline tension-5 stars) are better. Are those little issues the price I pay for buying used? Maybe. I do have a warantee, which is one of the reasons, I was willing to pay the price I did for this ""certified preowned"" as opposed to some of the other retailers out there that didn't offer anything and were not that much less in price.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

        Very used

      Posted September 4, 2017

These are solid chairs but wear has rendered the particular one I bought nearly unusable compared to new or refurbished. Probably will return. Price was way too high for the condition it was in.

No, I do not recommend this product.

        Best chair ever!

      Posted August 10, 2017

I had a Herman Miller Aeron chair at my last office. It was great, but I didn't appreciate how AMAZING it was till I started a new job & my chair was awful! I just received my new Aeron chair today & immediately felt better! I could not be happier!

      Yes, I recommend this product.

        Just like brand new

      Posted August 2, 2017

I was slightly concerned about purchasing a ""PreOwned"" chair, but the one I received was to me no different at all from being brand new. The condition of it was immaculate, and the packaging for shipment was impressive. I purchased this chair for home use after using the exact same chair at work for the past three years. It is by far in my 35-year working career the most comfortable chair I've ever had to sit in for 8-10 hours a day. That's why I knew it had to be this exact chair at home too. I have a word of advice I discovered with my new chair for people who have never used them, and may think the chair is uncomfortable. Our office was ""upgraded"" to all new ""ergonomic"" chairs made by a totally different manufacturer. I soon went home every day with a sore back, and no amount of time or adjustments made it more comfortable for me. Eventually I noticed there were a few people who had these Herman Miller Aeron chairs instead. After a long waiting time I was able to inherit an Aeron chair from someone retiring who had already used it for at least two years previously. It immediately made all the difference in my comfort at work. I think these Aeron chairs have a ""breaking in"" aspect to them that the more they are used, the more comfortable and pliable the mesh material becomes. The first couple days my new chair was noticeably stiffer and harder to sit on than my work chair is. But as the weeks have gone by, it is becoming better every day. Just give it time, it will fit to you like a glove.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

Comfort and Style as you would expect

      Posted June 19, 2017

The materials and build quality are impressive. The chair is extremely comfortable. Even though it is a pre-owned chair it looks brand new.

        Finally got an Aeron

      Posted April 7, 2017

We are very pleased with this chair. It is pre-owned, but arrived looking like brand new. It was shipped very quickly and well packaged for the journey. We got the additional lumbar support and the hard floor casters. It is so comfortable and fully adjustable. The casters are great as the chair doesn't slip away on the floor, but rolls easily when it's time to move. Worth every penny. In fact, just ordered a second chair so we each have our own. And my brother bought one too!!

      Yes, I recommend this product.

    Design Story

About the Designers: Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf

“We were basically told to design the next-generation office chair.”
      — Don Chadwick

In the 1970s, Herman Miller was deep into research in the field of office ergonomics and work seating and challenged Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to rethink traditional designs of office chairs. Their research produced the award-winning Ergon chair in 1976, and Equa chair in 1984. Building upon what they had learned, Stumpf and Chadwick began working in the early 1990s on a design for the world’s most comfortable office chair. Keeping in mind Charles Eames’ point that chairs should be designed for how people sit rather than how they should sit, they set about designing a chair that would: (1) Promote the health of the person sitting in it (2) Move and adjust as simply as possible (3) Support a person in any position (4) Really fit large or small people (5) Be environmentally responsible.

The resulting Aeron chair was introduced in 1994 to immediate success, and has become an icon of contemporary design. It introduced the use of a semi-transparent mesh-material called Pellicle, which allowed air to circulate against the sitter’s back, as well as conform to the shape and build of the user so that pressure on the impact areas is minimized.

The visual transparency of the chair exemplified the idea of transparent architecture and technology, a design strategy dedicated to producing objects that would be less opaque and intrusive in the environment. Far ahead of its time in that it was composed of mostly recycled materials, the chair was engineered to be easily disassembled and recycled. Notable among the numerous design honors given to Chadwick and Stumpf during their careers was the inclusion of their revolutionary Aeron chair in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection.

      About Herman Miller

Founded in 1923 and recognized today throughout the world as an innovator in office and residential furniture design, Herman Miller has been ranked since 1986 among the top ten in Fortune Magazine’s annual list of the 500 most admired companies. Their pioneering research into producing environmentally responsible furniture has earned them GreenGuard Indoor Air Quality certification for most of their products. Aesthetically, many of Herman Miller’s iconic designs, particularly from the 1940s and 1950s, are valuable collector’s items and on permanent display in museums such as the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Smithsonian Institution.

In 1933, new furniture designs created by Herman Miller designer Gilbert Rohde exhibiting the smooth lines and unembellished shapes of the emerging mid-century modern furniture style were exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair. In 1944, Rohde’s successor George Nelson designed such enduring icons as the Platform bench, and was famously responsible for teaming the company with such influential design artists as Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames. Charles Eames, widely regarded as a genius in contemporary furniture design, produced one of Herman Miller’s most successful products in 1956, the elegant Eames Lounge chair. In 1994, Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf introduced a new office chair called Aeron (derived from the word aeration, which describes how the mesh suspension promotes comfort), which became an immediate worldwide success and earned a spot in the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as well. Today, Herman Miller continues to attract world-famous designers like Jeff Weber, Jerome Caruso, the Studio 7.5 Design Team in Berlin, Yves Béhar, Mark Goetz and many more.

If the purpose of design is to solve problems, and the relationship between design and business is synergistic, then Herman Miller today continues to be in the vanguard of design as a fundamental part of strategic planning.
